MAIN SITE - FEATURE - Magazine section #157

Hello all,

I've been thinking about the magazine section I've been dreaming about for quite awhile now. As a youngster I always read ST Format and have fond memories about this. All STF magazines are scanned these days and scattered online between the STF shrine and Atarimania. Why this is divided into pieces is beyond me. Anyway, I would like to take it a big step further. What I would like to do is enhance the magazine features we have currently on AL (I don't like this at all). I would like to have a dedicated magazine section at AL but every single page of every single magazine should be linked to the DB. What I mean is that every mention of a game, a developer, a company, should be linked to our DB. So when people go to eg the game 'GODS', at this detail page all pages of all issues of STF appear that have an article, reviews or preview available of this game. This would be something amazing. And of course, it is open source so everybody benefits. I just hope we don't have to fight with other sites to get this done. Another thing, I want to present the magazines online in such a way that they are easily readable using a phone or tablet, without having to zoom or do stuff ...

Now, I know this is a crapload of work, but now comes the beauty. All my life, i love reading magazines ... on the toilet! Now, since the whole cpanel is responsive and available on a phone, I would gladly read some digital STF issues and link a few pages to our DB at the same time...The DB will be finished pretty quickly that way :-D

Who likes this idea of a magazine section? Overkill, or maybe go for it at one point in the future?

A nice example of a reader : https://archive.org/stream/Hoogspel/HS02#page/n13/mode/2up

I definitely like that very much :heart_eyes_cat: I'd be glad to be able to find old game reviews and other related articles for a specific game, across a bunch of magazines. I always dreamed of having a global index of all the magazines that would point me to all the reviews for a given title.

I think we could start by making use of the magazine data that's currently there and display it on the game details page, possibly linking to the magazine if we can (like ST Format). Then we can improve that with more fine grained details, like the exact page the article is on, etc.

I also love this idea. But I think we need to delve in the DB structure of the magazine section again. And let's be honest, we first need to do the game structure, and the menu section (merge with Stonish) and ... and ... ;-) But it is cool we are on the same page....
