would be nice if atheme wasn't needed to get the channel list

That would involve spawning an /additional/ irc client, in order to /LIST (as well as /LISTing again every time it needs to display, to keep updated)

I don't see any value in this. Iris is designed to work with Atheme; if you want to run it without then you should probably have qwebirc instead.

@bush6: Iris is designed to work with Atheme, but some support for Anope may be added later. Not sure yet. Either way, it is intentional that services are required for querying network state.
