NetCDF can be generated with ncgen -o sample.nc sample.cdl, with the data in CDL format. There is also the library C NetCDF and NetCDF Fortran and NetCDF C++. It would be interesting trying to generate and manipulate NetCDF files with a SC3 class on R.
