Not that you would see it like this, but this is the layer of reeds once the roof has been removed (and no mud mortar on top).
The beams are still unfinished as I will add a fair bit of variation so they aren’t completely straight and have some dusty/ mortar spill over.
I’m either assuming the beams would be embedded in the walls (kind of like how Putlog holes were added to walls for multi storey scaffolding) or, the beams were placed on top of the stone work and then mud mortar and stones filled in between the gaps between beams (so there wouldn’t be a gap between the wall and the ceiling).
