Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. Right now managing the life cycle of notification is partly done in the protocol and partly in the apps. Idea is to take care of the complete life cycle in the.

Re-opening as now that I look more closely I see this was created as one of the tasks in #546, and it hasn't been done yet.
