Welcome Basket #20

Open polunsky opened 8 years ago

polunsky commented 8 years ago

Short description of the idea (140 character tweet):

Notify new residents of key services with targeted messages and swag by aggregating existing data. Measure usage and outcomes.

What is your project concept or idea? What challenge or opportunity will it solve?

New residents need information about nearby services, especially those that emphasize city goals such as mobility options and digital inclusion. Elected officials need to be current with the people they represent. Austin needs to shore up its brand as the Music Capital of the World and raise awareness of services and processes. A possible approach to these needs is Welcome Basket.

Welcome Basket is the following process:

  1. New residents are identified (possibly TCAD for ownership data, source for renter or other data not yet identified).
  2. A letter is generated from the Mayor or County Judge (depending on ultimate scope) with the following text and information (data sources noted where available):

Welcome to Austin. We thought you might want to know the following civic information, which is based on your street address. You can also access this information online, with links, and if you use this [unique or password-protected URL or QR code or both] we have some services to offer you might not be aware of, and a little something from us!

Nearest grocery [data source not identified; addresses city goals regarding healthy eating]
Restaurant with health inspection score >70 [health department database, 70 was picked at random, demonstrates the database]
Bus stop [capital metro, demonstrates mobility options]
Public library with wifi [addresses digital divide]
Live music venue [city permit database, underscores city's music identity]
Travel time calculator [possible cooperative venture with Metropia or similar, paired with alternatives and noting services for people with disabilities]

Name and contact info for elected representatives for districts with lines that cross the city or county [US Congress, State Senate, State House, County Commission, City Council]
Neighborhood Association
Voter and vehicle registration information

[Signature]

The online version would include a survey if there are issues the city would like input from new residents on, and offer options that highlight services the city provides for free like:

Would you like a police officer to conduct a free home security survey?

Would you like a free home energy audit?

Completion of the survey would net a reward like a free one-week Capital Metro pass or rebate of city sales tax on one purchase up to $5. Special offers from local businesses could be included.

The letter could be cc'd to the elected officials and appropriate neighborhood association to aid their outreach and inclusion efforts.

Metrics could include using the resulting survey data to identify which city services appeal most to newcomers, any gaps, and whether this approach results in increased use of these services.

Who will benefit from your project? Describe the humans at the center of the problem - who are they?

How would they benefit? Can you tell their story?

Do you have photos of them? Or quotes?

Everybody wins!

Issue area(s) relevant to your project idea:

It's all in the above.

Tell us about yourself.

What is your background? Why is this challenge important to you?

Are you representing a group in submitting this project idea?

Neighborhood association president looking for ways to improve sense of community. I'm presenting it on behalf of the North Acres Homeowners Residents Association, unless it involves a cash outlay, in which case I'm representing myself until I get board approval for an expenditure.

Thanks for submitting the idea @polunsky! I think there is some interesting potential here!

Hey @polunsky ! I really like the idea of allowing a resident to request information about services near their neighborhood. I was wondering if it would be beneficial to expand the project to include non-residents. For example, instead of having the letter generated by an office, let's open the letter-generation. You already have all the nationwide data. Perhaps create a service (text, email based) that accepts a zip-code and returns relevant information near you. This way, you can include those special survey features for verified home owners but have a larger user base for your information.

Anyways, just some ideas. I like the concept! Jason

polunsky commented 8 years ago

@jemrrs Those are great ideas that hadn't occurred to me. What sources are you thinking of for the nationwide data? I hope you'll keep sharing your thoughts.

ghost commented 8 years ago

I'm a little lost on my own project in terms of data, but as I keep researching, I'll keep you in mind if I come across something that would be beneficial.

I really like how this sounds!

jcdwyer1 commented 8 years ago

I dig this (also - we meet again!).

  1. Families with children would probably also appreciate knowing the closest public pool and park.
  2. Would you consider partnering with a private company that might help fund mailings in exchange for exposure? I'm thinking specifically of a service that could add value to your goals, like nextdoor.com. They already have a mailing division that sends postcards to new residents with a membership invitation.

@jcdwyer1 I'm working on a similar function for my project, Austin Environmental Progress. We aim to map a group of 'environmental positives' including parks, pools, healthy restaurants, etc and provide a zip code lookup function! Check out my issue and comment if you have an suggestions. We're looking for data sources!

jcdwyer1 commented 8 years ago

@jemrrs Great idea, don't know anything about data tho, sorry!

ssharif1 commented 8 years ago

You're in, @polunsky ! We invite you to pitch your project at the 2016 ATX Hack for Change!

Now that your project has been approved, here are some things we suggest you do next: https://github.com/atxhack4change/2016-project-proposals#once-your-project-is-accepted-here-are-some-things-we-suggest-you-do-next

If you haven't sent us your contact information, please do so now. ssharif1@stedwards.edu

You will receive an email shortly regarding you speaking slot for the Saturday morning pitches. Please let us know if you will no longer be able to champion your project at the hackathon.

danielhonker commented 8 years ago

@polunsky - you should have received an invite to join Slack. If you haven't already joined the team and seen the Slack channel for your project, it's #welcomebasket. We'll be sending out an email with details on pitches soon.

Hey @polunsky This idea got picked up and will be further examined at Austin Design Week Design-a-thon.

You can join the design a thon slack here: https://join.slack.com/t/adw-design-a-thon/shared_invite/enQtMjU5NTM3MDM4ODk5LWNjNGZlZTgwYjdkZjNiZWRiYzVkNGIzM2U5MmYzOGJmNmY1Mzk5YjE2MWY4YmE1MzljODZlZTZkNmJmZmU4YzQ

And their channel is #basketcases

The final result might not be what was initially conceived but the event is geared towards identifying users, making workflows, and starting to prototype solutions.
