Disable Atheletes Health/Equipment Monitoring System #33

Open Franknsled opened 8 years ago

Franknsled commented 8 years ago

Short description of the idea (140 character tweet):

I am looking to monitor equipment and health data on disabled athletics. This will give us a better understanding on if a disabled athlete is having any health issues during play.

What is your project concept or idea? What challenge or opportunity will it solve?

We are looking to use a Arduino P101, a Raspberry Pie, the internet, and a computer on the side line to monitor health and equipment data real time for each player.

We are using the on board gyroscope, acceleration/deceleration, and impact sensors on the Arduino P101. This will allow us the ability to monitor the angle of a sled hockey sled while in a corner, we will be able to use the acceleration sensor to be used for training and to monitor an athlete to make sure they are not over exerting themselves, deceleration sensor and the impact sensors will be used to figure out how hard a player is hit and what direction the hit came from during competition and practice.

We are looking to incorporate a pulse monitor, blood pressure, breathing rate.

All data will be transmitted to a sideline computer for monitoring real time.

Who will benefit from your project? Describe the humans at the center of the problem - who are they?

All disabled sled hockey and wheel chair basketball players can benefit from the data for safety issues.

We have players with SB, MS, AS, Cerebral Palsy, single amps, double amps, and yes a triple amp that will benefit from this project. After completion we are going to ask Paralympic Sled Hockey Gold Medal Winners to help us test out the project. I am on the ice with them 2 times a week.

How would they benefit? Can you tell their story?

With the high impact sport of sled hockey all players from low level abilities to International Players can benefit from this project. Personally I am 56 years old and would like to be able to monitor my vitals during play. LOL

I had a friend named Larry Turner. Larry was an able-body person that run most of the disabled sports in Austin. Larry was at a wheel chair basketball tournament in Killeen 2 years ago. Larry was on the court in a wheel chair playing in the tournament. He came off the court and died on the side lines from a heart attack. If we had this information from the project we might have been able to save Larry’s life.

I have another friend that said I could use his story, if I did not use his real name. Disabled people can be real quite about their health issues. He has removed himself from our sled hockey team. He has had multiple strokes in the last couple of months. He has family history with strokes. We need to be able to monitor his vitals to be able to allow him back on the ice. He was on a Sled Hockey Team, with me, that won a National Championship in 2015 for Sled Hockey. But to get him back on the ice we need to monitor him in real time.

Disabled Sports Athletes not only have the normal health concerns, but they can have special health issues we need to address. We have kids from 10 years old to adults to 58 years old on our team that can benefit from this project.

Do you have photos of them? Or quotes?

Issue area(s) relevant to your project idea:

I need some help combining the sketches already written for the gryo, acceleration, deceleration, and impact sensors into one sketch for the Arduino P101.

I will need help in designing the sketches for the blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate.

I have the P101 running the sketch for the gyro, the P101 is talking to the Raspberry, the Raspberry is talking to the internet. We will need to write code to have a zero reference point for the gyro for monitoring the angle of a turn of a sled.

I also need help creating the program that will display the data on the side lines computer.

Tell us more about the current state of your project idea.

Do you have any links to news articles, text, mockups, code, or data?

We have a mock up but need help on the software end.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a 56 year OLD guy. LOL I have a hereditary disease that is fussing my spine and neck. I have always been a individual sorts type of person, but when I went out on disability in 2006 my health spiralled down. Sled Hockey and the guys on the ice literally saved my life. They encourage me to keep going and never give up. Since 2012 I have played at 5 teams at the USA Hockey Disabled Festival Games. We have won a Bronze Medal, a Silver Medal, and YES a GOLD Medal in 2015. I would like to give back something meaningful to my disabled community. I have played with Austin Blades, Seattle Snow-King Thunderbirds, San Antonio Rampage, Texas Sled Hockey, and 3 Sochi Paralympic Gold Medal Winners in Sled Hockey.

I figure what better way to give back to the community and try to keep EVERYONE a safe as possible.

What is your background? Why is this challenge important to you?

I was born and raised in Montana, joined the military at 15, had 2 boys in my 30's (YEAH they are both out of college), I started working in the electronics industry in the mid 80's. I have a background of maintenance and management in the electronic industry from 1984 to 2006. This project is very important to me since I have friends that are passing away and we might be able to save them if we know their health issues in time.

Are you representing a group in submitting this project idea?

I am a player of the Austin Blades Sled Hockey Team. We are a 501 (c) 3 Organization.

The idea will benefit all Disabled Athletes in the country.
