Thanks for the report - can you email me the webwork_install.log? It should be in /opt/webwork. Also, I didn't hook in my install_chromatic script b/c I thought Mike fixed 2.7 (or 2.8) to automatically get it working...is that not right? In any case, if you have the log that would be most excellent.
Also, I just installed 2.8 fresh on a new Debian 7.3.0 and 1) JSON was installed ok for me, and it's in the prerequisites list in install_prerequisites.sh. What page did you see an error on? 2) File::Find::Rule - new dependency for OPL-update - good catch - I'm about to push a fix 3) Ah, MathJax installation changed in 2.8 (no longer a git submodule) - also about to push a fix. 4) Chromatic.pm and color.c: It's Mike's code that doesn't seem to work. He put in code to automatically compile and color.c if needed, but it doesn't seem to be working on debian. Permission problems most likely....I'm checking with Mike about this.
Ok, I've fixed all of these except the JSON issue with commit ce74fa66319e0bedc2b06ab6a061e43092cead32.
Actually, I think I may have been mistaken. Its quite possible JSON was installed already. So I wouldn't worry about that.

I just used the installer for the 2.8 release on a debian machine. The only issues I had were
