change to readme document to include simple getting started example, links to documentation, and re-organisation of contributing details

first step towards addressing issue #318

Booya! I merged it in. I'm going to make a few minor modifications and push those back up. Then, we can use this as a template for the other repos. Thanks for getting this started @freshcutdevelopment !
