why is this development so slow?

The developer works on this voluntarily, so no one is entitled to request this 
or that level of effort to be put into this project, beyond what is put.

That said, I share the feeling of disappointment, especially considering the 
fact that the people who use this tool use it often and a lot.

Perhaps the only useful act could be to start a discussion about alternatives 
to KeyNote, free or commercial. On this subject I can only say that I did not 
find anything that comes even close to the convenience and feature-richness of 
KeyNote. At least not yet.

Well, there's a program "Essential PIM (free edition)" which allows to create 
notes in the same tree-view form as KeyNote with Rich Text formatting. Not 
multi-tabbed notes, however (at least, in the free edition), but anyway MUCH 
better than free edition of TreePad. Besides that, "Essential PIM" is actually 
a "Personal Info Manager" with additional abilities such as Sheduler, Reminder, 
Contacts etc.

I actually use EssentialPIM (paid edition.) It's a good PIM (calendar etc.) but 
its outlining is very inferior to KeyNote. It doesn't support most features of 
KeyNote, it is slow, clumsy in its interface, with so-so keyboard support. 
Also, it stores all data in one big obscure database (along with the rest of 
the PIM data: calendar, address book, etc.) I feel it's not made as a 
standalone outliner. The Outliner is there just to say that it has one and for 
jotting notes here and there. I cannot imagine using it daily as the primary 
authoring tool...

I had no intention of replacing keynote. Even in its current state it is far 
better than anything i've tried (and I have tried almost everything out there). 
 I was merely being impatient with the author. Look on the bright side,at least 
we have an author now...

Keynote is a great program, even with its slow development pace. However, if 
you want to try something quite similar regarding functions, try RightNote. You 
can download a trial version from http://www.bauerapps.com/. One thing I like a 
lot about RightNote is its search panel (resource panel, same name as in 
KeyNote), because the list of hits show the actual text searched for 
(highlighted) and you can go directly to that text simply selecting the row 
with the hit in the list. Try it. If KeyNote implemented this in its resource 
panel, it would be really great.

Thank you hlopez. I agree KeyNote is an excellent program. I used it for years. 
Even before NF I was frustrated with the development progress, but never found 
anything better, even commercial. Indeed, RightNote seems to do the job. It 
adds some stuff KeyNote does not have, such as tagging and indexing, but above 
all it seems as it is actually maintained and committed to slick design. I 
agree it is a viable alternative. Thank you very much for pointing this out.
