Does the intention of DISC_SPC conflict with the guidance notes? #76

The original AGS4UK guidance notes for DISC state:

The discontinuity sets or zones are recorded in a combination of the DISC and FRAC Groups. The DISC Group is used to record either the typical orientation and nature of each set or zone of discontinuities, or the individual discontinuities. The FRAC Group is used to record the spacing of the discontinuities in each set or zone. and Each discontinuity set or zone must be given a unique set reference number in FRAC_SET. For example, joint sets may be numbered J1, J2, J3 etc, bedding discontinuities as B1, B2 etc. The use of FRAC_SET provides the link between the DISC and FRAC Groups.

This guidance was retained in the AU notes for guidance.

However, AU also added heading DISC_SPC defined as "spacing". This would appear to conflict with the model for describing joint sets given in the guidance notes...

Possibly a relevance of the two approaches depends on perspective. An engineering geologist might characterise a joint set as relating to a geological event (eg destressing relating to seismic event), while a geotechnical engineer logging core might characterise a set based on similar features and a desire to spend less time describing each defect..
