Possibly a relevance of the two approaches depends on perspective. An engineering geologist might characterise a joint set as relating to a geological event (eg destressing relating to seismic event), while a geotechnical engineer logging core might characterise a set based on similar features and a desire to spend less time describing each defect..
The original AGS4UK guidance notes for

defined as "spacing". This would appear to conflict with the model for describing joint sets given in the guidance notes...
