All of our modals close without asking when the user clicks in the black area of the modal. In this case if a users clicks off they have to start the form over.
Possibly ask if user wants to close this modal when user clicks in black area, add an "X" to the top right of the modal to close the modal without asking, and allow the escape key to be used to close modal without asking for advanced users. This could be applied to all of our modals, not just the publishing.
