Fix build for modern environments

[grimreaper]

• allow non-Linux builds
• fix build for python 3
• add additional flags to make it clear that this is barely C++ code
• fix 'domainname' is the utsname struct
• and a few other things

This doesn't actually get it fully to the point of building, but it gets it much further.
