Upgrading major dependencies to their latest versions so the project can be included in modern python apps
Upgrading code to match pydantic v2 style
Fixing some scipy/numpy warnings on using sum vs. "sum" in pandas data frame aggregations

Note: also includes changes from #72 that should be merged before this PR.
