I fully understand your frustration The easy solution is to either let the user turn off those new tab openings or not open them at all (same long-term effect) However, there are a few downsides:
Do you have an alternative idea of what could be done better?
Since the extension is of type "install and forget", the user will not know of new features (obviously)
If I install and forget the extension, do I really need the new features? :)
Users won't be exposed to translating the extension
I didn't even know this existed regardless.
Since my Twitter profile is linked there, I lose a way to communicate with the users
Not really. You can easily link to your social media in the extension settings or store page or GitHub. There are many ways for people to find your Twitter if they want to. Opening tabs for them that contain links is not a great way to get followers. :/
Do you have an alternative idea of what could be done better?
No, there's really no alternative to this because my objection is to the tab-opening regardless of what the content of the tab actually is. There are however alternative ways to reach your audience without resorting to opening new tabs... like linking your social media in the options page / repository / store. You'll have to accept the fact that you can't reach all users, there's no way to force people to see your announcements without annoying someone.
P.S. I'm not trying to be rude or complain or anything. Just a bit annoying when tabs open on their own is all. I would appreciate a setting at least even if it's on by default.
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe A lot of extensions automatically open a tab to their website whenever they update. This extension is one of those, and I can't find an option to turn it off. (Firefox)
Describe the solution you'd like I'd like an option to turn this off
Mock-up UI N/A
Additional context I don't particularly like new tabs being opened on me randomly :( even if it's infrequent.
