replace collector code with a service #1

On the off chance that the UI gets reaped by the OS the data collector
should be split off as a service.  As it currently stands the app can be
reaped and left unrunning without the user being aware.

first attempt at fixing this is now available as 1.1.0

I'm using the internet as my QA, so please report back success/failure :)
