When the AJAX response happens, the purge UI gets reset to "pick one".

What should it go to? The user is no longer there...

Not quite. The exact steps:

select a user in the purge dropdown (any user)
wait for up to 15 seconds to get the next playerStateRequest to happen
the purge dropdown gets rewritten and the selection is reset, causing possible misclicks
