JFYI, however, the default version of collectd and collectd-core available on Ubuntu xenial as of today is incompatible with this plugin (version 5.5.1-1build2 500).
To get it to speak the metrics out to CW, downgrade the version of collectd and collectd-core on Xenial to 5.4.3.14.g0b97cf2-1~xenial (available from https://pkg.ci.collectd.org/deb).
You could also stick with what the doco says and run it on stock Amazon Linux and use the version of collectd (collectd-5.4.1-1.11.amzn1.x86_64 as of today) which works as intended with CW.
