O3D installer should abord in non-supported OS versions [was: plugin crashes]

practically all examples crash the plugin and kill the browser. the ping
pong example works, but was rendered incorrectly (see attachment)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. open scene viewer or hello world example

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
o3d version 0.1.38.1
browser firefox 3.5 and internet explorer 6
operating system: windows 2000

What hardware are you using:  graphics card type?  motherboard type?
notebook: targa visionary 811
ati mobility radeon 9700

O3D required XP service pack 2 or newer OS.  We don't run on windows 2000.  
Having said 
that, the installer should check the OS version and abort if it doesn't meet 
the specs.
