AZ News hero media #2314

Motivation

UAHS Communications produces a lot of news content. Video content and video stories comprise a significant portion of our output and many of these video-heavy stories do not have a "hero" image, per se. We are interested in pursuing the option of having News nodes that do not have have a hero image but rather a hero video. We have this functionality in our current, custom D7 site but are seeking corresponding functionality in QS2.

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

No, but it will be challenging to migrate our video content into AZ News without this functionality. Our office intends to continue producing video stories and we would like our video content to be the most prominent element on the News item in these cases. For example, please see Promoting health, inspiring 'awe' in aging adults, Training and keeping primary care physicians in Arizona or Paving a path for Valley fever research, treatment, prevention.

Proposed Resolution

Adjust AZ News so that the current Photo field is a Media field that either accepts a single photo (current functionality) or a video.

Describe the solution you'd like

For the video option, AZ News default node display would show the video in the current position of Photo.

In the case of the AZ News teaser node display, a thumbnail of the video will instead be used.

It is desired that the thumbnail of the video be used and potentially derived from whatever service is hosting the video. For example, when we host a video on YouTube, their platform will automatically select a frame from the video to serve as the thumbnail if one is not explictily set by the uploader. At a minimum, this auto-selected thumbnail would also be used by the AZ News teaser node display. If the auto-generated thumbnail is insufficient, the author can provide a custom thumbnail/cover image via the Media browser dialog.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Adjust AZ News so that the Photo can be hidden on the default node display. Then, the video would be embedded at the top of the Article Body.

Roles and Permissions considerations

A clear and concise description of how each of the following roles would be impacted by this change:

Anonymous and authenticated users are unaffected. These users will click on the video thumbnail (now serving as the AZ News teaser image) and go to the default node page. On this page, they can start the video using the normally included video player controls that come along with an embedded video. Content editors and higher will now have the option to set a Photo "hero" image or a "hero" video. Ideally, the node will be able to derive the thumbnail from the selected video but it may be necessary to explicitly allow an editor to set a thumbnail if Drupal cannot automatically derive a thumbnail.

Possible sub-task #3211

@danahertzberg I can confirm that your suggestion to set a Thumbnail image and not set the Featured Image for this particular case works. I'm not sure how I missed that... It's too far in the past for me to remember what I was thinking back then. In any case, thanks for your insight!

@djcelaya So glad that worked in this case!

If you embed a video using the WYSIWYG editor, there is no spacing beneath the emebed and it hugs the following content. Red is an embedded remote video and Blue is an embedded image:
