Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 is integrated with newer analytics offerings such as Azure Synapse Analytics along with Azure HDInsight and Azure Databricks. In addition, Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 offers a rich set of capabilities for your analytics needs such as :

  • Lower cost
  • Tiered storage
  • High availability and disaster recovery

With this new experience, we're retiring Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 on 29 February 2024

They continued with the following:

After 29 February 2024, you will not be able to:

  • Create or manage Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 1 accounts
  • Access the data through the Azure portal or the Azure Data Lake store
  • Access the APIs/SDKs/client tools
  • Receive service updates to Azure Data Lake Store Gen1 or APIs/SDKs/client tools or access customer support (phone, email, web)

Announcement Feb 25, 2021 Deprecation was announced
Creation Blocked July 5, 2021 Account creation will be blocked for new customers
Portal Migration Tool July 14, 2021 Data can now be migrated through the Azure Portal (docs)
Deprecation Feb 29, 2024 You will no longer be able to create & manage Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 accounts nor access the data stored on them

Impact

Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 will be retired on 29 February 2024 and customers have to migrate to Gen2.
