There are four typical errors that VNese people make with the long /i:/ and the short /ɪ/ vowel sounds when speaking in English.
First, they always use the short /ɪ/ sound, even when they should say the long /ɪ/ sound. So people sound like this:
Second, many VNese people say a very long /i:/ sound or and /ei/ sound at the end of words ending with '-y', so they say "happyyy" instead of "happy", "busyyy" instead of "busy", companyyyy instead of "company".
Third, sometimes VNese people open their jaws when they are trying to say the /i:/ sound and they will say a sound that sounds like a long /e/ sound. So they will say /fe:l/ instead of /fi:l/ or /je:t/ instead of /fi:t/.
Fourth, sometimes VNese people dont know which of the two sounds should be said when they see a word with these sounds. There is a solution to this problem and you will see this when we talk about the spelling rules of /ɪ/ and /i:/.
