I think it is a good idea to integrate with one of desktop time trackers listed here www.redmine.org/projects/redmine/wiki/ThirdPartyTools

If the time tracker tool already integrates with Redmine then no additional work would be necessary to make it work with backlogs, because tasks in backlogs are just specially configured issues.
