Lists in use:

Client: iVPN antitracker

Domains:

ipify.org
www.ipify.org
api.ipify.org
api4.ipify.org
api6.ipify.org
api64.ipify.org

Details:

This service does not appear to be used for tracking. It is used by developer tools to aid development, and having it set in the Pro list breaks those tools.

ipify.org and www.ipify.org - these are just the website, not useful to block.

api.ipify.org and variants - these are what the developer tool uses to report back the external IP address. As any server could do this in theory, blocking this service isn't providing much overt protection for the user, in my opinion.

I'm leaving out geo.ipify.org as it could expose the user's location.

Thank you for supporting 1Hosts.

Unblocked by AdAway and Steven Black's hosts: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts/issues/1180

but it is still used in spyware to track your location

robrecord commented 9 months ago

@spirillen what can you tell me about this? Do you have any example?

I’ve already said don’t unblock ‘geo.ipify.org’ as it does track location, but the other ones don’t.

I’ve already said don’t unblock ‘geo.ipify.org’ as it does track location, but the other ones don’t.

That can be true, but you have no needs for any of the other, as everything relays on geo.ipify.org to be anything, so why not just block it all.??

And a little side note to everyone, I#ve lost my entire archive of records and why's so if you are into PHP, and would like to rebuild mypdns from bottom up, please get in touch

As I mentioned in my first post, my developer software (roots trellis, using ansible) relies on the api fuctions of this service to whitelist my IP address when creating a site, and this functionality is unrelated to the service at geo.ipifyand is not based on it. It’s actually the other way around: geo relies on the pure IP functions. Geo is used in tracking, and devs need only the pure IP functions.

Basically I cannot deploy sites without the pure IP detection and it’s built into the frameworks I use, so I can’t easily change to another one.

So yes, I’d like to request to unblock everything except geo— please.
