I don't understand what is the problem. This page configures the set of
predefined resource roles. "Default" consists of just two: 'unknown' and
'project manager'. Just click OK to create a project.
If you want to add your own custom roles, you can do it later in the project
properties.

"If you want to add your own custom roles, you can do it later in the project
properties." cannot be done...
Nothing works in order to enable the addition of a project and so everything
must be "default" or "software development"
When clicking 'Add' in resources later an empty dropdown appears but it cannot
be edited and neither can the projects or anything else that appears to give
the option to add a new project or edit an existing one.

You may want to watch the video tutorial, starting at approx. 8:05

Okay, thanks for that.. it is still quite confusing though. Let me explain:
I work from home and have a number of projects I need to keep track of. There
doesn't seem any way I can create projects and track them on the chart without
having to add "resources" (which seems to be other people in a team) as I don't
have any coworkers etc.OK - I just read back to clarify and you have
misunderstood my initial question:
I want to create a new project - I have several projects I run at once - yes i
do a small amount of software development - but for the most part my work
involves writing and marketing. I want to start a project called (for example)
"Current Book" and one called (for example) "Blog updates" and another called,
say "Website tweaks"
When I try to create these projects, the tool does not allow me. It only allows
me choose the existing "software development." The drop down is greyed out and
won't allow me add the names of my own projects.
Please see my initial query and screen capture for clarification.
PS - I can add a resource and tasks the way it is shown in the video, but there
is no way shown to add a new project title.
At 3,10 approx, the guy in the video adds a project and at 3;30 he clicks ok
and is brought to a new screen. But when I click on PROJECTS then NEW and enter
my details and hit NEXT I get only the choice of two role sets: Dafault or
Software Development.
I want to start a "Writing" project and enter the tasks, then start a
"Blogging" project and enter the tasks, so I can see what I need to work on at
any given time.
Does that make the problem clearer?
I am including the problem area in the image again...
Maybe this just isn't suitable for a solo worker and needs to have more than
one person working on a project?

Please read this carefully.
When you create a new project, you don't have to add resources. You don't have
to add roles either. The following scenario works fine:
1. Start GanttProject
2. Click Project->New
3. Fill in the project name, e.g. "Project 1"
4. Click OK (do not click Next!)
This creates new empty project named "Project 1". Go ahead, create tasks,
create resources or roles if needed. You can save this project to a file and
create a new one if you want to. You can open previously saved project using
Project menu.
Reading your messages, I can guess that one thing which probably could confuse
you is that GP works with 1 project at any single moment. Maybe you tried to
create two projects in a single GP window -- that's not possible.
Hope this helps.
