A primitive USB patcher for installing macOS Big Sur on unsupported Macs

In the terminal run `ls /Volumes` (or `cd /Volumes && ls`). #10

I am in exact same situation. Command in Step 6 fails with no file of directory.

ls /Volumes does not show Image Volume

Attached what I see in the USB booter file system

In the terminal run ls /Volumes (or cd /Volumes && ls).

It shows all the currently mounted volumes. Image Volume should be one of them.

If it's not then write all the drives listed into the comments, otherwise I have something else I would like you to do. (Both should help find the error.)

What is the full list of volumes?

That screenshot is incredibly messed up. That macOS logo is the High Sierra logo not the Big Sur logo, the Utilities menu should be at the top of the screen and not at the side, it should have Terminal and Startup Security Utility (not Disk Utility, Terminal, and macOS Post Install), and the entire interface should be in dark mode.

Look at your first screenshot too. It says "Install macOS High Sierra" not "Install macOS Big Sur Beta". The listing of files on the USB drive looks nothing like what it should.

Yep. I redid the whole thing over—turns out I picked up the wrong USB stick with a HS install on it. Dummy.

However now I am at the Recovery install screen for BS but no mouse and keyboard action at all, so I cannot start Terminal to try the command!

1 step forward and 2 back.

MacPro 5,1 with upgraded metal video card (GTX680) and upgraded WiFi (from iMac 2014)

That's strange. There are some Macs where Big Sur has built-in support for USB 2.0 but USB 1.1 requires a patch. (Late 2009 MacBooks -- MacBook6,1 -- are a good example.) What you're seeing is typical behavior for a MacBook6,1, but not for a MacPro5,1, or MacPro4,1 for that matter. (A MacPro3,1 needs the LegacyUSBInjector patch for USB 2.0 as well, so it fails to boot at all.)

At some point (my best guess is the beginning of September) I intend to improve my patcher so that it can add LegacyUSBInjector to the installer. At that point, it might be worth trying again and seeing if the problem still happens. It might also be worth trying each new beta to see if there might be any USB fixes. My MacBookPro8,1 had some USB problems in beta 1 that were fixed in either beta 2 or 3, for instance. Other than that, I don't know what else to suggest. Sorry.

Thanks Barry,

Checking again it is a 4,1 that has been flashed to the 5,1 firmware. There is also a USB3 Gen 1 type-C PCIe card in there so maybe that’s causing a problem. Does the installer support BT so that a BT Apple mouse and keyboard can be discovered from the installer?

Odd thing is that the keyboard and mouse work at the “press Option key to select the boot drive” stage.

But not after the Recovery screen loads.

I think it supports BT in theory, but I don't know if the BT support in the installer works on older Macs. It's something I'll have to try testing when I get a chance.

(By the way, flashed 4,1 vs. actual 5,1 shouldn't make a difference when it comes to USB support, as far as I'm aware. There have been some reports of flashed 4,1 getting into boot loops during installation, but it doesn't seem to happen for everyone and we don't yet know what causes it.)

Odd thing is that the keyboard and mouse work at the “press Option key to select the boot drive” stage. But not after the Recovery screen loads.

What happens if, after the Option key stage, you unplug the keyboard and mouse from the built-in USB ports (I assume that's where they're plugged in now) and plug them into a hub that is plugged into the USB 3 card?

Or, coming at this from another angle: Do the keyboard and mouse work if you boot from an unpatched Mojave installer USB? What about booting from a dosdude patched Catalina USB?

newkton1 commented 4 years ago

Hello Barry—thanks for your effort on this.

  1. I'll try an Apple BT keyboard and mouse.
  2. Nothing—if I use a Type-C to everything (USB Type A, LAN, XD card, etc.) dongle connected to the USB3 Type-C card, I get a lit laser at the mouse but no movement.
  3. Yes, the keyboard and mouse work in both dosdude1-patched Mojave and Cataline
barrykn commented 4 years ago

Thanks for the info.

Regarding #3 -- "the keyboard and mouse work in both dosdude1-patched Mojave and Catalina". I reiterate, what about unpatched Mojave? (Just boot an unpatched Mojave installer USB stick and see if the keyboard and mouse work after it boots.) This will give me a better idea of what's happening with USB on your system.
