Anyone was able to install 11.2.3 on iMac late 2013?

mgexm commented 3 years ago

People are going to think I'm lying when I tell them this ...

I downloaded 11.2.3 using that python project and mounted the dmg. I put the installer onto the usb stick using createinstallmedia and run the micropatcher. I put a non metal video card in my macpro 4,1 converted to a 5,1 running Firmware 144 (so that I could see the boot screen basically to see the usb installer). After booting the usb stick, I clean the SSD I'm targeting for my Big Sur 11.2.3 install. After disk utility is done I then run the Sur install at the SSD. 15 minutes go by then machine restarts. Another 20? go by ... the machine reboots once or twice more ...

... I look up AND THE LANGUAGE PICKER IS ON THE SCREEN ! I didn't have to run "patchexts.sh" 100% I did not have to run patchexts. I've done this so many times that I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the language picker.

I finish the install and take the non metal video card out putting my nvidia 720 GeForce card in. I then turn the macpro on and Big Sur comes up.

If that wasn't killer enough I LOAD THE MOTU DRIVERS FOR MY AUDIO AND MIDI DEVICES THAT I COULD NEVER GET TO TRULY WORK UNDER PRIOR VERSIONS OF BIG SUR AND START LOGIC PRO and so far after a few hours it's still working.

I'm going to wipe and try this out on a 2011 MBP ... that I have the original Sur release on. ON the 2011 MBP you have to shut off the accelerated video (I forget the manufacturer as I'm writing) and use the Intel HD. THe crazy thing is in Logic Pro they draw the play head using metal so it's a little annoying not to see it when runnning LP on a MBP that doesn't have a metal video card. Maybe an emulation fixes that ? Ok one night at a time. Anyways on my MacPro I have metal so this is not an issue there ... but rather an annoyance to do project work on the MBP.

@mgexm Sorry, you did what now? What Python script and DMG are you talking about? Please give a short howto on the very first steps. thx

mgexm commented 3 years ago

Sorry @bugbomber ... the python script is here -> https://github.com/grahampugh/macadmin-scripts and when you run ./installinstallmacos.py that allows you to get the Big Sur dmg file from Apple. Then once it's downloaded you click on it to mount it. A window pops up after you mount it BUT you don't run the install app that you see at that point ! Instead you put a usb stick into your mac and you create the installation media : https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

bugbomber commented 3 years ago

Ok, testing it right now. What would be the difference to bigmac2? I mean, does the python script already modify the DMG/Image?

mgexm commented 3 years ago

Sorry @bugbomber ... the python script just downloads Big Sur dmg file. Again that python script lives here -> https://github.com/grahampugh/macadmin-scripts. When you run ./installinstallmacos.py that allows you to get the Big Sur dmg file from Apple. Then once it's downloaded you click on it to mount it. A window pops up after you mount it BUT you don't run the install app that you see at that point ! Instead you put a usb stick into your mac and you create the installation media : https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

Now I'm sure this is going to confuse everyone ... and if you could verify it please do. Typically BETWEEN THE PARTS OF THE INSTALL WHERE THE OS COPY TO THE SSD COMPLETES AND THE POINT OF THE INSTALL WHERE YOU SEE THE LANGUAGE PICKER I would have to boot the SSD (which macos recovery starts), then I run terminal, and then run patch-kexts.sh (https://github.com/barrykn/big-sur-micropatcher/blob/main/payloads/patch-kexts.sh) and I use the flags --2012 --wifi=mojave-hybrid. LAST NIGHT with the release (and micropatch of 11.2.3) I DID NOT HAVE TO !

The reason why I linked this over to Big Mac is becuase this all worked using barrykyn's micropatcher on a MacPro 4,1 that I converted to a MacPro 5,1. I did not have to use Big Mac 2.0 !

bugbomber commented 3 years ago

Sorry @mgexm but it doesnt install here. Created the usb drive as usual, usiing the image downloaded via the script. formatted the SSD 64GB testdrive, which is for testing purposes in my 5.1 (original, 144 FW). But when I try to install Big Sur, the installer says, that it cannot be installed onto this drive...

mgexm commented 3 years ago

You need to make sure the SSD is formatted as a "MacOs Journaled with GUID partition map" BEFORE you run the BS installer.

Again... you load the Big Sur distribution, have it put on a USB stick using createinstallmedia, then you run barrykyn micropatcher point it at the USB stick. That updates the usb installer. Then you boot the usb stick (hold the option key when your mac chimes) and recovery comes up. You then run disk utility and make sure the SSD your going to load the OS onto is formatted as a "MacOs Journaled with GUID Partition map". If the SSD is not formatted that way then running the Big Sur installer is going to say exactly the error you see :)

bugbomber commented 3 years ago

i know. Tried journaled AND APFS (which is the preferable one). Will try again...

mgexm commented 3 years ago

The SSD has to be MacOS Journaled ... that's the middle selection ... and then GUID Partition Map. The installation of Big Sur converts it to APFS along the way ! TIme and time again (with earlier versions of Sur obviously) I'd have to reformat the SSD back to MacOS Journaled/GUID Partition Map using Disk Utility (again in recovery mode) ... and then after that I would be able to select the SSD when Big Sur install started. I know exactly what you're talking about cause it's the 1st? 2nd? question when you click on the "Install Big Sur" application that shows up in recovery mode.

bugbomber commented 3 years ago

Yeah, it just will not accept my drive. No matter what I do. It is either "cannot be installed on this drive" or for external drives "it is protected". Hm, will try again tomorrow

mgexm commented 3 years ago

Yeah my SSD is internally installed in my MacPro.

bugbomber commented 3 years ago

of course mine is also an internal drive... But still, installation is not possible the way you/we describe it.

If anyone needs the URL of the full installer: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/12/32/071-14766-A_Q2H6ELXGVG/zx8saim8tei7fezrmvu4vuab80m0e8a5ll/InstallAssistant.pkg
