Filling in VAT number doesn't do anything #37

I would expect it to then deduct tax.... it's sensitive for fraud though, but (probably) not our concern.

With country/VAT code did you test?

tonroosendaal commented 10 years ago

Our own code: NL818152011B01 One found on web GB472795211 And the complain mail had this one: ES34253289X

Tested in various places, like here http://www.check-vat-number.com/

All three work there, but the spanish one not on the official site. http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/

In our store neither of the codes seem to do anything. Does the code check something fancy?

It's supposed to check against the EU VIES service. Dutch codes shouldn't work as they're not elibigle for the 0% tax exemption, but other EU countries should do it. I'll look in to it. --  Bart Veldhuizen

I set my account to be from Belgium btw. How can it be tested?

And now the cloud member mails:

Hello

After reading some docs from aeat.es, I think you are asking a regstered VAT number, required for professionals and enterprises doing intracomunitarian transactions, and I'm buying as a private citizen for personal use. So I think it's not necessary to use such registered number (and of course, I don't have it).

Can't read the minds of such people... but it doesn't take away that it would be nice to have a way to test this form for support reasons.

bartv42 commented 10 years ago

I tested this functionality and it works fine, but as you say it does require a European business VAT number. For clarify, I added the following description:

"For European Union users, we will add VAT to your order. If you’re a registered business, enter your VAT number here for a VAT exemption."

Also, please note that the entered VAT number and the result of the VAT check are available from the order page in the WooCommerce backend.

How can we test it then? We have to be able to give support to people who fill in numbers wrongly or so. Maybe we can add a link to the EU site where one can verify the number?
