@n-i-x i know it's a pain, but can you replicate this using another distribution supported by the SBC or not? I suspect this is either a hardware fault of a device-tree issue - thanks.
@Ntemis - thoughts. Have you got this device to try & replicate?
When using RCade, I can use external storage just fine without the sound issues. I’ve only seen this issue in Batocera when selecting the external device as ROM storage. It’s beyond bizarre and happens with any external drive I’ve tried.
can you try this dtb file (from link below) in your /boot folder replacing the existing one?

please test again.

The Rockpro64 doesn’t have Wi-Fi built-in so that’s interesting. I’ll try the updated dtb in a bit and report back.
The new DTB does the same thing
When switching from internal storage to external storage (for /userdata not booting), HDMI audio becomes very distorted. The sound is as if the audio volume is at 1000% no matter what the volume level is. It's nearly a full hissing sound.
I've tried USB3 and USB2 drives and I've tried multiple drives. As soon as the external USB drive is removed and the system is rebooted, the audio is fine.
