some methods don't work anymore, mainly the spec parts, bc we switched to markdeep.

we can prob purge that code -- if not, at least revise it
also, the rest of release.py is for python packages, for the python engine.
maybe just keep it kicking around for future? and rename it, and add some notes, so it's clear that it's for python
