self._log = open('/var/log/messages', 'r')

It seems that it's dependent on a distribution or logger or logger configuration in use. Substituting it like this won't be good for the other people.

Hi, for which distribution does this issue occur? I could easily add another try/except block to handle this case if it's really a problem.
