Thermal throttling #79

Hi everyone.

Sorry me in advance for being a noob.

I'm experiencing serious thermal throttling on my Dell. I installed Mac OS using the bavariancake master of November 2019, with no additional update since then.

Especially when running intense apps, like Logic Pro, the max frequency of the CPU starts to decrease from 4.0 GHZ as soon as temperature hits 80 °C, and then plumbs down to 0.8 GHZ (!). You can see the graphs here: https://ibb.co/64bsWfM

I will soon replace the thermal paste, but is there any way to mitigate this via software? For example by increasing the mean RPM value of fans.

I've tried a software of fan control by crystalidea but was not able to manage manual RPM, since both the minimum and maximum values detected by software were already at the maximum (66535).

Thanks you in advance.

Luigi

@luigisvideos, I am also interested in being able to manually configure the Fan's frequency since I have noticed that when the temperature increases, their speed almost does not vary. Please, if you manage to solve the problem, please comment on the solution.

You can see this issue reported in another repository too: https://github.com/LuletterSoul/Dell-XPS15-9570-macOS/issues/48

@eamigo86 Thank you so much for this reference. Do you have applied the suggested hardware modifications? (thermal pads on VRMs, thermal tape, ...) What is your experience about them? Thanks again

AFAIK, there are only three grades for Fan speed: 0, 2500, 5100. I have updated some contents about Fan speed in the above thread eamigo mentioned. For your problem, I suggest trying to disable DPTF from BIOS.

@wtdcode thanks for you update.

unfortunately, I was not able to find any entry of the BIOS related to DPTF. Could my BIOS be not updated?

Hi, I noticed that you mentioned the fan speed only have 3 levels: 0, 2500, 5100. That's true, my Dell Inspiron 5580 has a problem which is the fan. It can only run at about 2500 or 5100 RPM, which causes a problem is that the laptop either quiet or noisy. Is there any solution for this problem? Thanks in advance!!
