You're right I just squashed the commits that I had in my branch and made the PR. I'll remove the cucumber tests.

I've removed the traverse_history feature.

I pushed a commit to fix the tests and I'm merging this instead of #261 since it's closer to the desired behavior, but we will leave it undocumented since it can break in some cases.
