The init.d script for zookeeper relies on daemon but, in my very limited experience, Amazon's EC2 14.04 Ubuntu doesn't come with daemon. I can add this as a package to be installed in the layer, but it seems like since this cookbook relies on it existing, maybe there should be a package daemon line? I didn't see any package lines, so I didn't know if you were avoiding this.
