when I un-check 'use puncta for Elision', it still leaves space for the syllable adding extra hyphens e.g cu i becomes cu - i it seems to be fixed if you just take out the empty parentheses

I'm not sure about this, but taking out the empty parentheses may cause the next punctum to be centered over the elided vowel in some cases. Perhaps this would be better to fix in exsurge. I will give it some more thought.

okay then. my fix was the hopefully 'easy' way which worked in my case i suppose the correct way to do it is make the transcriber process the elision as part of the previous syllable, so that you get cu<i>i</i>(ih) instead of cu(ih)<i>i</i>() that should work without any exsurge changes
