Set major ticks locations to a wave with non-evenly spaced values. The minor ticks will be spaced according to the smallest two entries, so you could get a case where there are more or less than the number of minor ticks between two major ticks. For instance, try a wave with 0, 1, 2.9, along with 4 minor ticks. A minor tick will not even align with the 2.9.
