Update README & add more docs #44

This PR addresses one aspect of #11. It gets the README.md somewhat up-to-date. Though a number of things are still undocumented. But this at least gets all of the existing examples current with the codebase.

I also create a more verbose CONTRIBUTING.md to link to in the Contributing section.
