Maybe run some benchmarks because ASP.NET Core 2.0 should be blazing fast. Perhaps a Visual Studio issue?

Figured this out - Visual Studio was downloading symbols from the internet on each build. Fixed it with these instructions: https://stackoverflow.com/a/17651762/6609109
