As a (Student) I want (to be asked about my identity with consideration) So That (I can answer correctly)

Do you identify yourself as an Indigenous person; that is, First Nations, Métis or Inuit?

Additional Context

Government recently announced the Distinctions Based Approach to working with First Nations, Metis and Inuit people, to respect and acknowledge these groups as distinct Peoples.

This is an excerpt from the distinctions-based approach primer, dated December 2023, which you can find at the link below. Each ministry and agency across the Province must apply a distinctions-based approach in the development and implementation of its policies, legislation, programs, operations, and funding initiatives, and in its engagement and relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit. This work must be done in a manner that reflects a distinctions-based approach and correctly identifies and engages the appropriate rights-holders.

Based on the underlined section that states we must identify each group as distinct, as a program, we should be eliminating the singular option of “Indigenous,” and instead implementing “First Nations,” “Metis,” and “Inuit;” and I would suggest a forth, “Prefer Not to Answer” option is also necessary.

**Michelle- I recommend that any static information like Indigenous and Youth in Care etc.. be asked at the account 1 time -not on the application. As this impacts all applications.
