9 months ago Per @bcholmes note in the forum discussion, page 128 of the core book restricts 4 roles (XO, Chiefs of Engineering, Security, and Medical) to LT JG at minimum. I think this tool was created before the proliferation of roles and discussions on rank vs role vs type of character (especially cadets), which probably limits things.
However, even if I choose a role other than the 4 mentioned, my 'young officer' is unable to be any other rank (and an experienced officer can't be an ensign). I don't know if there's a way to add logic that interacts between rank and role on the final steps page (there probably is, but it's probably messy). If not, I think allowing Ensign for all characters is needed, with a note below the chooseable ranks about the 4 roles mentioned.
(Klingons have the same a similar restriction that applies to career length and rank, but it applies to their Lieutenant rank, page 117.)
Edit: Actually, maybe just modifying the descriptions of those specific roles to say "(Lt. JG and above.)" at the end would be good enough from a UI perspective, in addition to adding Ensign for characters.
Per the modiphius forums (https://forums.modiphius.com/t/star-trek-adventures-online-character-generator/94/463), a character of the Young Officer career length can only choose Lt. J.G. as their rank.
