@bcwaldon - I'd like to merge this if possible - I have some work that I've done in my master branch for Neutron support that depends on it, and I'd rather it go upstream for wider usage.

PS - sorry for accidentally pushing to master on Monday, I fat fingered which remote to push to while sitting in EWR. Jet lag + git = disaster.
