Buzzing Steppers preventing ESP32 connection #4

I successfully constructed a SCARA-type sand drawing table using the TMC2209 Pen Laser V2.0 controller board and Grbl ESP32 firmware. After about a year of non-use, I plugged in the controller only to hear the steppers buzzing loudly. (They were always very quiet). I could not connect to the ESP32 via ESP3D. I unplugged the steppers and I was able to connect without any issues. As soon as I add the steppers I can’t connect. I must be overlooking something fundamental but I’m just not seeing it. Do you have any suggestions? I’m trying to avoid re-flashing the firmware which was a major pain for someone with my limited (zero) coding abilities.
