The following special chars (besides ASCII alphanumeric) are retained:

• Exclamation point (!)
• Hyphen (-)
• Underscore (_)
• Period (.)
• Asterisk (*)
• Single quote (')
• Open parenthesis (()
• Close parenthesis ())
