Beets repeatedly writes acoustid tag #3232

Problem

Beets writes the Acoustid tag every time I run 'beet write', despite already being correctly written to the file. I've verified that the tags are indeed identical and I've verified that xxx and yyy in the output 'acoustid_fingerprint: xxx -> yyy' are identical. This seems to happen to both flac and MP3 files and I've verified with mid3v2 that the tag is correctly written to the file.

Running this command in verbose (-vv) mode:

I'm beginning to believe that the acoustid_fingerprint tag is of some other type, but the tag from the file is loaded as a normal string. If I have a file with the acoustid_fingerprint: AQADtFsSRckm4T34B37w4UPa and run beet modify path:file.mp3 artpath=AQADtFsSRckm4T34B37w4UPa it'll modify the tag, outputting acoustid_fingerprint: AQADtFsSRckm4T34B37w4UPa -> AQADtFsSRckm4T34B37w4UPa with the strings completely red, implying they're different types. Furthermore, if I use --no-write in the modify command, and then use beet write manually, no difference is found between the database tag and the file tag (i.e. the file tags were already of the type I modified the database tags into, presumably string)

Weird - I can't reproduce this at all. I've tried with both MP3 and FLAC and I always get this output from beet -vv write:

Weird. Is there a way for me to print more info about what happens in field_diff? Might clear things up a bit if I can see the field types

It might be useful to add some print statements to the _field_diff method so we can see the exact old and new values;

After adding a test print there too, the prints from _field_diff showed up, and the new field has a b ahead of the quote

Got it; so the old value is a Unicode text string and the new value is a bytestring. That would do it. I think this was fixed in #3097—can you take a look there?
