The repeat-record feature automatically appends time stamps to the file name.  
Can this option be expanded for non-repeated recordings?

This is now an option (r421). Just go to 'Set recording streams' and use the 
checkbox.

This application setting is saved when you close NR, so you should not have to 
reset every time.
