It is a known bug. It's fixed in this fork https://github.com/tete1030/zotero-scholar-citations. There's also an open PR to include this fix in this repo, but the original owner seems to not be too active at the moment. :/
Many thanks Max!

Recently, this addon has been acting up: both saving new papers, and using the right-click command UpdateCitations, don't update the number of citations, OR (even worse) bring it down to zero. This might depend on GoogleScholar's temporary bans for repeated queries, but it happens even when not a lot of queries (e.g. 10 or so) have been sent at once, and even when browsing to Google Scholar doesn't bring up the captcha page.
Is this a known bug?
Thanks very much for any help. Am using Zotero Standalone 5.0.65, together with Chrome.
