Null instead of spaces #1342

Describe the bug Null instead of spaces. I open one of the example problems set with text and I want to add the same step with a different description, but after add step, I get a text with nulls instead of spaces.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Go to Example problem with text
  2. Add a description to the step
  3. Add step
  4. See Null instead of spaces

Expected behavior Spaces instead of nulls

Probably related to #1274

I think John's onto it here -- the example word problem used has the words written using variables rather than text, which is a problem with the underlying problem set. This will be addressed in #1274.
