The solution with the solenoid was not quite satisfying. So I tried this naive attempt to have a conic spiral screw (proper term?) pushing the focusing mechanism. It's precise and fast and for the 10x lens sufficient in stepsize. Will need to characterize it. The Thread can be made finer for sure.

It is slighty more expensive since you need a 3rd NEMA 11 motor but will integrate nicely into the GRBL-based openflexure software: here.
