maybe add a LED near the web cam for kind of dark field for the microscope @beniroquai

Opposite side to the camera with a similar level arm?

why opposite side? can be light source for camera as well?

i am not quite a fan of opposite side. Because the arm limits the movement of the objective, as it is relative thick and now is already limited by the coupling and camera from both side. if it is not really big issue against same side of the camera, i would prefer same side

Got it! Let's discuss that on the microscope directly. Agree with the limited motion point! Same side would be sufficient too. Some dark-field-like illumination. Should be orthogonal to the waveguides to observe the edges.
