Wow+Request #80

Wow this addon is great! To think I've been surfing profiles on this dating site for so long and I went unarmed with this addon! Thanks for undertaking this project and doing such a great job with it!

Now to my request. The one thing I'd like to see is a likes video game category. I know there are several questions related to this like the "Would you be willing to date someone who plays video games almost every day, for at least 2 hours?" and "Have you ever spent more than 8 hours straight playing video games?"

Also I don't know if this would be possible but would it be possible to have an option to highlight if a person is transgender? I have no problem with a transgender finding love but I'm simply not interested in dating someone who falls into that category.

@Fryu360 , thank you for getting involved and for opening this ticket.

I'd love to add a video game category. If you're interested in suggesting specific questions and categories for the plugin, I will gladly include them.

As for your second request, something about it makes me uncomfortable. I think it's something to do with labeling a user in spite of who they feel they are. If a transgender OkC user identifies as female, it seems disrespectful for me to make assumptions and present them in a different way without asking.

Now, one could argue that the entire plugin does this with every category. If a user doesn't want to be seen as poly, the plugin will still id them as "nonmonogamous". Maybe that should be "nonmonogamy" instead... but the categories don't all switch tense (not the right word) nicely...

One could also argue that if a user doesn't disclose something that they are going through, like a gender transition, that's disrespectful to the person looking at their profile and potentially messaging them and meeting them.

It's a big and super greyscale issue, and I'm not sure how to handle everything. I'm positive there are things I can do better... but for now, I think it's important to not call out specific properties (like trans, or anything else).

For now, you can use the "transgender-open" category, though that doesn't label people as trans or not... Of course, the best way to handle this would be for OkCupid to remove the gender binary. Facebook already did, but for a dating site (especially one that acts progressive) to still enforce a gender binary... that's awful.

This is half rant, half thoughts,... I hope you find this response useful. I really am interested in everyone else's thoughts on these issues (and if there are things I can do better). If you think I'm wrong, let me know and back it up. I'm open to changing my mind assuming all affected parties are represented in the discussion.

Edit: By the way, if there are questions like "are you transgender?", I'd be okay with making a transgender category. I haven't seen any questions like that (though I haven't had much time to search thoroughly).

OKC has opened up the gender listings a bit, so this may be less of an issue now.
